NT-NL Table Talk

What is an NT-NL Table Talk?
Glad you asked!

Mike Baughman 2Just as Luther would gather his followers around him at the dinner table and share his wisdom for conversation, faith renewal, and edification, we gather at tables at Briarwood for such stimulation four times in 2012.

This coming Thursday, February 2, anyone and everyone is invited to our first Mike Baughman2012 Table Talk featuring our DreamCaster:  Mike Baughman, a United Methodist pastor, author with Augsburg Fortress and Sparkhouse and speaker on the emergent church and social media.  He says:

"The ability of the church to accomplish the mission set by Jesus has always hinged upon one thing: our ability to tell stories. GoodMike Baughman
stories inspire loving, learning, transformation and giving. The church is at her best when we tell the stories of lives transformed by God--through the Bible, through your church or through your non-profit."

We know, too, that the best story-tellers are the ones who can listen the best to others. Through social media, writing, teaching and preaching, Mike Baughman is available to help you tell your story and listen to the people whose stories matter to you.  Mike is a professor at SMU's Perkins School of Theology.

Come "Join us at 9:30 am or so...stay a while, stay all day, lunch is
$ 10.  DLA! funds pick up the cost of welcoming Mike, we will all conclude by 3 pm.  Come enjoy our Table Talk and grow in faith!

Brought to you by DiscipleLife Alive!

Congregational  DLA! Responses

A recent canvass of our NT-NL congregations by our DLA! Directors reveals that more than 55 of our congregations are planning some kind of DLA! response.  They are telling the DLA! story and letting people decide whether and how they will respond.  Have you heard of DLA! in your congregation?  Now is the time!

If you need help with resources, a new four-page brochure is available online -- click here.  This makes a great bulletin insert.  Commitment packets available for each member to help them prayerfully discern their level of commitment are also available.  Contact your Ambassador or the Mission office for details.

A newly developed four-page brochure telling the entire DLA! story is now available for use as a bulletin insert. Click here to see it  or contact the Mission Office at 214-637-6865 for us to send you multiple copies!

"What is a good goal for our congregational response to DLA!??"

Good question!
With a commitment of just
$ 2 per worshiper per week across the NT-NL Mission Area we will meet our
$ 3 million goal.
That's just $ 100 per year or $ 300 for three years!
Multiply that times your average worship attendance to set a congregational goal.
See our
Giving Guide.

Mission Assembly - Celebrating!

MA12 StripMA12 Logo smThe 2012 Assembly brings to conclusion a six-year string of assembly themes that have all been focused on DiscipleLife. This will be a turning-point assembly. We will celebrate all that we have done together in mission these six years, all that God has entrusted to us as we are God’s witnesses and hands in this world, and all that we want to do in the future as we “run the race with perseverance”. First, we will celebrate our own plans for mission in the NT-NL as we hear of the power and progress of the DiscipleLife Alive! Initiative. Second, we will celebrate the mission of the whole ELCA as we enjoy the stories and music of our global mission. Our assembly speakers are leaders in the ELCA’s global mission effort: the Rev. Rafael Malpica-Padilla, Sunitha Mortha, and our own Pastor Kate Warn. And, third, we will elect a bishop to shepherd us for the next six years. No wonder the key word of the assembly is Celebrating! It will be a busy assembly.   Learn more.

You’re Invited to a “Glocal” Mission Festival
You may not be a voting member or visitor at the 2012 Mission Assembly, but you may want to enjoy the activities that are a part of their agenda on Saturday, April 28. The day will transform into a “Glocal” Mission Festival (global + local) as speakers, musicians, worship, and a global marketplace invite everyone into a new and deeper appreciation for the worldwide work of the ELCA.  Join the fun as we hear, see, sing and participate in the global mission of the church.

From Merger to Merger: A History of the ALC's Southern District, 1961-87

A history of the Southern District is now available, authored by a number of folks active in the former judicatory. Malcolm Hoffman, Ruth Bohls Kelling, and Bob Pfennig wrote about the three decades of the Southern District. Kelling was joined by Thomas Engler, Hilmer Krause, and Chris Schultz in penning essays recalling the role of the pastor’s spouse, the music, the preaching, and the architecture of the period. The 200-page book also includes a 40-page photo gallery edited by Luther Oelke.

A limited publication run will be completed in early January. To reserve a copy of this first edition of the history, please send a donation of $35 to: ELCA Region 4-South Archives, 1090 Oestreich Dr. Seguin, TX 78155. Checks are payable to Southwestern Texas Synod. Or save postage and handling by picking up a copy at the Lutheran Ministry Center on the campus of Texas Lutheran University from 10 am – 3 pm for $30, beginning January 15. No phone or e-mail orders, please.
